Statement of Principles

The Primacy of Gnosis

We affirm the central importance of direct experiential knowledge (gnosis) as the means to attain spiritual enlightenment and liberation.  Gnosis is a personal, mystical encounter with the divine that transcends mere intellectual or religious dogma.

 

The Gnostic Tradition

We acknowledge the rich and diverse heritage of Gnostic spirituality, drawing from various sources such as ancient Gnostic texts, esoteric traditions, and mystical wisdom from different cultures and eras.

 

The Divine Mystery

We recognize the divine as an ineffable, transcendent reality that can be experienced and approached through many different paths and religious symbols.  We honor the pursuit of the divine within the context of personal, spiritual exploration.

 

Esotericism and Inner Wisdom

We embrace the wisdom of esoteric traditions, emphasizing the importance of inner transformation, spiritual insight, and the pursuit of deeper knowledge as a lifelong journey.

 

Inclusivity and Tolerance

We welcome people from all walks of life, regardless of their background, gender, sexual orientation, race, or beliefs.  We uphold the principles of tolerance and acceptance, promoting a harmonious and diverse spiritual community.

 

Ritual and Sacraments

We employ symbolic rituals and sacraments as vehicles for personal and collective transformation.  These practices serve as a means to connect with the divine, heal the soul, and deepen our spiritual awareness.

 

Sacred Texts and Wisdom

We draw inspiration from sacred texts, both Gnostic and non-Gnostic, as sources of spiritual insight.  These texts are valued as guides, but we do not adhere to literal interpretations and are open to the allegorical and metaphorical dimensions of such texts.

 

The Inner Christ

We acknowledge the Christ as a universal symbol of divine consciousness and inner potential that resides within all individuals.  This concept transcends traditional religious boundaries and invites each person to discover their inner Christ.

 

Community and Fellowship

We encourage the formation of spiritual communities where members can share their experiences, support one another on their spiritual journeys, and engage in activities that foster personal growth and mutual understanding.

 

The Pursuit of Wisdom and Compassion

We affirm that the goal of Gnostic spirituality is the integration of wisdom and compassion in one's life, leading to personal transformation and the betterment of the world.  We strive to be agents of positive change, promoting love, understanding, and the alleviation of suffering in the world.

 

In the spirit of these principles, The Gnostic Catholic Union seeks to create a nurturing and inclusive environment for seekers of Gnostic wisdom and the mystical exploration of the Divine.
